The Akerkhof is one of Groningen's most iconic locations, situated next to the historic Der Aa Church and surrounded by monumental buildings. The area exudes history, culture, and craftsmanship—values that seamlessly connect with The English Hatter.

The building is strikingly situated in the closed northern facade of the Akerkhof on the north side, on the corner with Akerkstraat, opposite the Aakerk. It was built in 1900 as a bank office, designed by Groningen architect A. Th. van Elmpt in an eclectic architectural style with elements of the Neo-Gothic and Art Nouveau styles. In 1917, the building was repurposed as a chocolate shop, for which purpose a window and door frame on the ground floor were moved. The interior, dating from 1917, remains entirely in its original state.
