From iconic fabric to classic shirts
When you think of Viyella, you immediately think of the world’s first registered branded fabric: a unique twill weave of 55% merino wool and 45% cotton. The fabric was first produced in 1893 in Derbyshire, England. William Hollins & Co. registered the Viyella brand name in 1894 and quickly gained fame for its soft, hard-wearing clothing that only became more beautiful with wear. In the 20th century, the brand shifted its focus from fabrics to clothing, and Viyella became the go-to label for stylish checked shirts for men. Even after Viyella became part of the Austin Reed group in 2009, the brand has remained true to its heritage.
Viyella button down shirts
The current collection of Viyella button-down shirts at The English Hatter builds on this rich history. The shirts are exceptionally comfortable in both winter and on cooler summer days. The characteristic soft flannel feel is combined with a modern fit, bright checked patterns and subtle chest pockets. In this way, Viyella shirts retain the same stylish charm that once distinguished British country gentlemen, but also fit perfectly into the current zeitgeist. The fabrics are also woven in Europe and produced in small quantities, which ensures consistent quality and modern colours.
Endless combinations
A Viyella button-down shirt is versatile and suitable for many combinations. For example, wear the shirt with asweaterfor a stylish yet relaxed look. The sturdy collar stays neat under ajacket, while the rounded hem ensures that the shirt can also be worn outside the trousers. Thanks to the use of wool, the fabric is odour-resistant and the shirt needs to be washed less often, which means that colours stay beautiful for longer and the lifespan is significantly extended.
